Roscoe SKB 3005 Fretless Exhibition Quilt Maple Top on Mahogany, Translucent Black
Exhibition quilt maple top on mahogany. My goodness. As our friend Jerry the president of the Roscoe fan club would say "This is thing is a BEAST"! Short, to the point & absolutely correct.

For starts the figure on the top is really exquisite & the translucent black shows it off in stunning fashion. The bass looks like a cloudy sky on a stormy night just before the rain hits. The clear gloss gives the quilt great depth. The unlined black fingerboard & matching quilt maple head cap ensure a seamless look.

The combination of the maple top, mahogany body & diamondwood fingerboard provide focused lows, plenty of highs & a great midrange growl that will sit perfectly in the mix. While it's not as svelte as most Roscoes at nearly 10 pounds the extra heft gives it more punch & cut which are critical in a fretless. It might sound too aggressive for a small jazz ensemble but would be fantastic for almost anything else.

And of course it plays like magic too. Black magic I suppose. The set up is smooth, the action low & playability effortless. The neck shape, heel-less joint, recessed neck bolts & body contours make the SKB a pleasure to work with. Stellar.
