Guitar
Instructor - Bill Schrey
Bill
Schrey has been playing since 1965, taking his first
guitar lessons from Mr. Gelb, the original store owner
of Gelb Music.
Teaching
Experience
Bill has been teaching at Gelb Music since 1976. He
has also taught at various rock and jazz summer camps.
He currently is teaching 50 students weekly.
Playing
Experience
Bill played in Rock and Blues bands at dances and parties
all through High School. He began taking music very
seriously while attending San Jose State College. He
played in the school Jazz band and various Jazz, Rock,
and Funk Bands at clubs and dances. He began his full
time career in music while as a senior, playing five
nights a week at a club in San Mateo. This gig lasted
for eleven months. This band, "Grandslam",
went on to play steadily for four years at clubs all
over the Bay Area, including a 3-1/2 month stint in
Japan.
After Grandslam,
he played in many more club bands, casual bands, Jazz
bands, Jazz Fusion bands, Funk bands, and Rock bands,
performing and recording original music and cover material.
Through all he's been fortunate to have played with
scores of the Bay Area's finest musicians as well as
many "name" musicians as diverse as: John
lee Hooker, David Grisman, Eddie Money, Pete Escouedo,
The Mama's and the Papa's, Lou Rawls, Jesse Colin Young,
Merl Saunders, John Denver, Neil Schon, Mike Shrieve,
Pat Thrall, Carmine Appice, Lee Oskar, and many more.
Recording
Experience
Bill has been playing on Radio, T.V. Jingles, corporate
in-house videos, documentary films, children's albums,
foreign language CDs, general AD work, some film music,
as well as original music CDs mostly of the "local"
artist type, since 1979.
Some of the
more notable recordings and ads include: "Garfield
the Cat" T.V. series and CD, "Peanuts"
T.V. specials, S.F. Giants, Oakland A's, Oak Raiders,
Safeway, Lucky's, Money Store, California Grapes, Union
Bank, Lotto, PBS Documentaries on "Barbie",
Triple AAA Auto, Hawaii, and Yosemite.
Teaching
Overview
Bill teaches ALL levels of proficiency from beginning
to pro in the styles of: Rock, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Folk,
Latin, Finger Picking, Including beginning to intermediate
Classical.
All students
will be taught basic skills in rhythm playing, soloing
and chord chart reading. More advanced students get
into music theory, playing rhythm and soloing on more
complex chord changes, understanding chord construction,
using arpeggios, advanced scales, etc. Sight-reading
is optional.
